Explore Aruba with a Funjet Vacation
Aruba is located 15 miles north of Venezuela in the southern Caribbean Sea, with pristine, white-sand beaches and calm turquoise waters that attract many visitors every year. The first inhabitants of the island were the Caquetio Indians of the Arawak tribe, who were hunters and gatherers dependent on the sea for survival.
In 1499, Alonso de Ojeda discovered Aruba, claiming it for Spain and naming it La Isla de los Gigantes, or The Island of the Giants, after the tall natives that inhabited the island. After no gold or treasures were found, the Spanish began calling it Isla Inutil, or Useless Island. In 1636, the Dutch occupied the island, recognizing it as a strategic location in the 80-year war with Spain.
The island remained under Dutch rule, except for a short period from 1805-1806, when it was ruled by Britain. In 1947, the Dutch government established a commission to promote tourism on the island, and by 1984, it was a well-developed part of the Aruban economy. That industry thrives today on the warm, tropical island.
