Offbeat Bahamas: Three Things for You to Do and See

Can I keep it ‘real’ with you? When you travel to the Bahamas, you’ll find predictable excursions such as relaxing on the beach, shopping, and sailing. The islands offer you much more, if you’re willing to tap into your curiosity and think outside of the typical “Caribbean vacation” box. Read on to discover three “offbeat” things for you to do and see in the Bahamas.

Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas

At 663 feet, Dean’s Blue Hole, located in a bay west of Clarence Town on Long Island, Bahamas, is not for the faint of heart. It’s safe to dive and snorkel, however, children and non-swimmers may want to opt out of the excursion. The drop-off from the beach is sudden – it’s a heart pounding experience!

The Hermitage on Cat Island

Not only is Cat Island the boyhood home of Oscar winning actor Sidney Poitier, but it’s the home of Monsignor John Hawes, known as Father Jerome. He built Mount Alvernia (named after St. Francis who reportedly received stigmata, or wounds of the cross), a tall stone monastery on a hill overlooking the ocean. The stairs built into the hillside represent the Stations of the Cross.
